![]() ![]() One thing Hangouts lacks is access to your Google Drive files. You can also easily share your location from Hangouts with a single tap, and set your status or mood for your contacts to see. Like WhatsApp, you can turn this feature off, in your profile settings (annoyingly Hangouts will periodically ask you if you want to re-enable this). But I have used it on my phone occasionally too and it works fine. The latest version has new sticker packs, and now allows you to see the last time your contacts were online. I mostly use Skype to make and receive calls on my Mac, though, not on my phone. So if you plan to use Skype, pick a Skype name that relates to your name. ![]() My Skype is an odd name that I created when I first created a Skype account and Skype doesn't allow changing one's Skype name. * When you call someone, your Skype name appears in their caller ID. I've tried to contact Skype about the bug, but there's no way to actually contact a tech support person. So I have to log in to the Skype website and turn voicemail off. However, once or twice a year, Skype's voicemail turns on by itself. * I've purposely shut off Skype's voicemail feature, because I want to use Google Voice's voicemail. I may have gotten a discount because I think some people may be paying $60/year. I then set Skype on my phone so that cellular data is turned off.īut that setup works for making and receiving calls on wifi. I also pay for Skype Out, which allows me to make outgoing calls to regular phones using Skype. And I set Skype (on the Skype website) to show my Google Voice number when I make calls. I set up Google Voice so that when people call my phone number they are forwarded to my Skype number and Skype rings. I pay for a Skype number that allows me to receive calls. Kevin, actually I have one other idea for you: use Skype ![]() Is there an iOS setting or a good app in the App Store, which will toggle cell data on or off automatically if I'm on Wi-Fi? I do this each time I come to a wifi location and it is cumbersome. Therefore, since I cannot trust the Hangouts app to use wifi only when I'm on wifi, I have to either manually change the Allow calls setting in the app to Wi-Fi only, or (the easier option) I go into my iOS settings and turn off Cellular Data entirely. Google's own support article (which I cannot find right now) says Google Voice will use the best connection for the call, which they usually consider is cellular even if I have a stellar wifi connection. Within Hangouts > Settings > Allow Calls > I use On Wi-Fi and cellular.īut when I'm on Wi-Fii, I can see from the Ting app that Hangouts uses cell data for the call regardless of whether I'm on wifi or not. (I'm not worried about hand-off of an in-progress call between cellular and wifi.) Since Hangouts uses about 1 MB of data (wifi or cellular) per minute of talk time (according to an article I cannot find now), this only saves me money on my Ting bill when I start and finish a call on Wi-Fi. The biggest advantage to using Google Voice is wifi calling. I use Google Hangouts with my Google Voice number for all calling and SMS text messaging. So my questions are: if I've shut off background refresh from all apps with that option, other than Google Voice, AND I remove all other apps from the application switcher, will Google Voice be the only app using cellular data? Or will there be other apps or iPhone processes that will use cellular data too? I also know, with iOS 9, I can double-click the home button to activate the application switcher and then I can remove apps from running in the background by swiping up.īut I'm still worried that the iPhone will somehow be using cellular data from apps other than the Google Voice app. I have about 70 apps on the phone, but not all apps have the option to shut off background refresh in their settings I don't know if that means that apps that don't have that option don't use data in the background. So, before leaving my house, I plan to shut off background refresh for the apps that have the option for shutting it off. I guess I'm just worried that my data usage will become more than I want. But I don't want any other apps to be running in the background. I want to be able to read any voice mails and texts on the go. ![]() Once I start using the phone out of the house and I'm not connected to a wifi area, such as on the bus, I only want to one app to use cellular data - and that's Google Voice. I'm waiting until the iPhone case I ordered comes in the mail before I start using the iPhone out of my house. I have the Google Voice app installed and it's working fine, although so far I've only used it on wifi. I've never owned an iPhone before, although I have an iPod Touch running iOS 6. I just bought an iPhone 5S and I've activated it with Ting. ![]()
